Inspired by their travels to Tuscany and the French Riviera, we caught up with the current owners Gary and Katie Reissig who graciously shared their insights into their inspiration and vision for their home of 22 years.
Exuding an old-world charm that captivates all who enter, The Reissigs sought to capture the authentic charm of European stone walls in their home and the result is nothing short of a marvel. “We wanted it to be very authentic and spent a lot of time with our stonemasons to capture the authentic rubble stonework that is prominent in Tuscany” Reissig said. The extensive collaboration with skilled artisans resulted in meticulous craftsmanship, both inside and outside, creating an ambiance reminiscent of a centuries-old Tuscan villa that must be viewed in person to truly appreciate.
Building a home with balance that would make sense throughout all stages of life was a must during the early design phases. “We wanted a home for both entertaining and private spaces as well. We’ve hosted many large family reunions and events over the years and the open areas we designed have worked perfectly for our functions.” More reclusive settings were also a feature the Reissigs considered in flex spaces like the home office that could easily be converted to a children’s study area or studio.
The heart of any home is the kitchen and the Reissig family created an ornate and functioning Old World kitchen complete with modern luxuries. “We do lots of grilling! We wanted a kitchen that included a small fireplace for wood roasting, an open gas grill, and a 48-inch Viking range and griddle. We added another big outdoor fireplace out by the BBQ area at the pool terrace.”
During the warmer months, the Reissigs gather in one of their favorite spaces, the downstairs lounge that opens up to the terrace they call “The Cantina”: “When we raise the 18-foot glass overhead door, it creates a seamless open air transition to the outdoor area. The space is perfect for watching sporting events and gathering with friends on weekends.”
The outdoor landscapes provide an idyllic setting for the house, reinforcing a sense of a private and peaceful retreat that feels far removed from the busy city. The property is graced with beautiful mature oaks that provide a framework for different garden areas and frame lush views.
Being conveniently located in Westlake, near Austin’s core, was equally as important to the Reissigs as surrounding themselves in Austin’s greenspaces: “The close proximity to Loop 360, the commercial development restrictions and signage limitations keep [our] area looking green and natural and beautiful. Plus the school district continues to be a big positive for this area.”
The Reissigs had a clear vision of how they wanted to inhabit this property, and their thoughtfulness left the perfect touch of historic Tuscany in Austin. This estate is a testament to that vision, and to the meaning of good design - architecture, interiors and landscape working in tandem to create something unique and meaningful.
